Every year uMoncton hosts about 800 11th grade students for an open house (journée portes ouvertes). Each participant takes part in two presentations based on the programs that interest them and get to catch a glimpse of their potential fields of study. Part of the logistical hurdles of this kind of event is easily and quickly dividing all of those students into their respective groups and bring them to different buildings on the campus. I came up with a design solution to this problem.
Upon arrival, each participant receives a name badge which has, on the back, the two workshops, as well as icons representing different buildings. When it’s time to separate the students into groups, Volunteers hold up large panels with the symbols on them and the students are instructed to find the icon representing their groups. It worked so well, the group separated like a drop of soap in grease.
We really want them to have a lasting impression from this day. So we also gave each participant a bandana in the school colors, so they could wear it that day.
